Yarmouth 250th Anniversary Coin
About the coin project
In early 2010, the 250th Committee Chair Ken Langille invited the Yarmouth & Area Chamber of Commerce to participate in a “trade dollar” coin project in commemoration of Yarmouth and Yarmouth County’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations taking place in 2011.
Having done this in the 1980’s for our 225th Anniversary, we still had some members who recall the details. The “Chamber” was pleased to again contribute and be a part of this great year of celebration.
The coins are valued at ten dollars ($10.00) Canadian and will be available through financial institutions of Yarmouth commencing May 12th, 2011 and will be legal tender until September 2nd, 2011.
The design celebrates the founding cultures of Yarmouth
The artwork for the first side of the coin and the logo for the 250th Celebration was designed by students at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (NSCAD). Mr. Lawrence Maberley took this design and produced the sketch suitable for the production of the mold for the first side of the coin. Finding the design for the second side of the coin was a little more difficult.
We firmly settled on a portrait belonging to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia depicting a ceremony which was historic in nature (1761). It was a Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed by the Governor, Council and the Mi’kmaq Chiefs.
Mr. Lawrence Maberley was able to sketch this scene for the production of the mold for the second side of the coin.
